A car that suddenly shakes at a stoplight, hesitates when you accelerate, or feels like it has lost part of its power is not just having a bad day. An engine misfire means one or more cylinders are not producing power the way they should. Sometimes the cause is straightforward, such as a worn spark plug. You may notice a rough idle, a vibration in the steering wheel or seat, a stumble during acceleration, reduced fuel economy, or an engine that takes longer to start. Fuel Delivery Issues
Each cylinder needs the correct amount of fuel. A clogged or failing fuel injector, low fuel pressure, contaminated fuel, or an issue with the fuel pump can create a lean condition and cause a misfire. Fuel-related problems may affect one cylinder or several, depending on the source.
Drivers sometimes notice these issues more when climbing hills, towing, accelerating onto the highway, or carrying a heavier load. Those conditions demand more from the fuel system and can expose a weakness that is less noticeable at idle.
Air Leaks and Sensor Faults
The engine computer calculates fuel delivery using information from sensors and airflow readings. A cracked intake hose, vacuum leak, dirty mass airflow sensor, or failing oxygen sensor can upset that calculation. The mixture can become too lean or too rich, leading to rough running and misfire codes.
This is one reason a parts-only approach can waste money. Replacing spark plugs may not solve a misfire caused by unmetered air entering the engine or inaccurate sensor data.
Mechanical Engine Concerns
Low compression, a leaking valve, worn piston rings, timing problems, or a damaged head gasket can also cause a cylinder to misfire. These are less convenient repairs, but accurate testing matters because the right diagnosis determines whether the vehicle needs a basic ignition repair or deeper engine work.
A misfire that stays on the same cylinder after ignition and fuel components have been checked deserves a closer look at compression and valve operation. Coolant loss, overheating, white exhaust smoke, or oil contamination can add useful clues.
When the Misfire Happens Matters
Pay attention to the pattern. It gives a technician useful information and can speed up the diagnostic process.
A rough idle that smooths out while driving may point toward a vacuum leak, a weak spark at low speed, or a fuel mixture issue. A vehicle that misfires only under acceleration may have an ignition coil breaking down under load, low fuel pressure, or a spark plug gap that is too wide. A cold-start misfire that improves after a few minutes can sometimes be related to moisture, ignition wear, injector performance, or an engine mechanical issue that changes as parts warm up.
Intermittent problems can be frustrating, particularly when the check-engine light goes away on its own. The code may still be stored in the vehicle computer. Avoid clearing it before diagnosis if possible, since that can erase information that helps identify the conditions behind the problem.
Can You Drive With a Misfire?
It depends on the severity, but it is rarely a problem to put off. If the check-engine light is flashing, the engine is shaking heavily, there is a strong fuel smell, or the vehicle has a major loss of power, pull over safely and arrange service rather than continuing the trip.
If the light is steady and the vehicle seems mostly normal, it may be possible to drive a short distance to a repair shop. Still, avoid hard acceleration, towing, and long trips until the cause is known. Unburned fuel from a misfiring cylinder can overheat the catalytic converter. That component is designed to reduce exhaust emissions, not handle repeated raw-fuel exposure.
There is also a safety factor. A vehicle that hesitates or loses power unexpectedly is not something you want to discover while merging into busy traffic or crossing an intersection.

Reliable engine misfire diagnosis starts with the vehicle's symptoms and a full scan for diagnostic trouble codes. Technicians then use live data, inspection, and targeted testing to narrow down the cause. Depending on the vehicle and results, that may include checking spark plugs and ignition coils, testing fuel pressure and injector operation, looking for air leaks, reviewing sensor data, or performing compression tests.
The goal is to confirm the failed component or condition before recommending repairs. This protects you from paying for parts that did not need replacement and helps address the actual reason the engine is running poorly.
It is also worth considering related maintenance. If spark plugs are due based on the manufacturer's service interval, replacing a single failed plug may not be the best long-term value. On the other hand, replacing every ignition coil just because one has failed is not always necessary. The right choice depends on the vehicle's condition, mileage, and test results.
What to Tell Your Repair Shop
A few details can make diagnosis more efficient. Explain when the issue began, whether it happens only when the engine is cold or under acceleration, and whether you recently filled up with fuel or had other repairs completed. Mention any warning lights, fuel economy changes, overheating, strange smells, or recent loss of coolant or oil.
